Pharmaceutics is one of the core disciplines in the pharmacy which deals with all facets of the process of turning a new chemical entity (NCE) into a medication that can be used safely and effectively by patients in the community. It is the science of dosage form design which covers the entire scope of pharmacy, from the basics of drug dosage and routes of administration, to the finer points of drug discovery, drug product development, and legislation and regulations governing quality standards and product approval for marketing.
The Department of Pharmaceutics is a place where commitment to excellence in academia, research and development is demonstrated through productivity and success of our faculty and students. We continue to march with times and our program focuses on expanding the scientific avenues for improving the delivery of drugs and therapeutic agents. We offer a training environment that includes latest formulation laboratory instrumentation and technologies supervised by experienced teachers and dedicated staffs for UG, PG and Ph.D. programs. The department has highly experienced and qualified faculty consisting of 1 Professor, 1Associate Professor and 8Assistant Professors.
About Department
The Department of Pharmaceutics was established in 1991 and introduced M. Pharm. specialization in Pharmaceutics having intake of 06 students in 2005. This program caters to the ever increasing demands of the Pharmaceutical industry, Research organizations and Academic institutions with special emphasis in the area of formulation development.
The department is well-equipped with the state of art laboratories, ultra-modern facilities and competitive staff which have been considered as most sophisticated infrastructure in the Western Maharashtra. Department Laboratoryis equipped with sophisticated and modern equipment’s like Freeze dryer (-80ºC and -55ºC), Spray Dryer, Extruder and Spherodiser, 10 Station Rotary tablet Press, Rotary flash evaporator,Transdermal Diffusion console, Aseptic handling, CO2 incubator, All Purpose equipment, HPLC(isocratic and gradient), UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Brookfield Rheometer, USP dissolution test apparatus with auto sampler, Stability testing chambers, etc,. The Department Library has adequate books, journals and internet facility.
The focused research areas of the department are,
Preformulation studies, Development of different pharmaceutical dosage forms including novel and nanotechnology based drug delivery systems,
Evaluation of developed dosage forms with respect to various in vitro and in vivo parameters and
Studying the biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic aspects of the drug as well as its dosage forms.
The department has received research grant of more than Rs 25lakhs. The staff members and research scholars participated and presented research papers at National and International conferences held in India.
A number of research articles are published in reputed journals every year. The department undertakes research projects from government as well as private funding agencies. The department has marked its importance in research activities and IPR by having 1 design patent.
